WHAT IS A VENEER?
A veneer is a thin restoration which only covers the visible part of a tooth, usually one that is in an area of the mouth where esthetics are important. Sometimes natural teeth are not attractive without some help. They can be dark, discolored, uneven, misshaped or broken. If the teeth is basically strong, it doesn’t always need the complete coverage and strength afforded by a crown. A veneer, unlike a crown, is a conservative restoration where only the front surface of the tooth is reduced very slightly or sometimes not at all. Then a porcelain covering is placed over the tooth, the veneer, and bonded in place. This new surface coating corrects the color, shape or position of the natural teeth and can greatly improve the esthetics.
WHY WOULD I NEED A VENEER?
A veneer is one method among many which will allow re-coloring, re-shaping or re-positioning of teeth. This thin coating of porcelain can change the color, shape or position of one or more teeth making them more more attractive.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A VENEER?
Veneers are often the best of increasing the esthetics of someone’s teeth. If teeth are significantly discolored, bleaching will not be adequate. Because a veneer covers the front of the tooth with a new material of the color of choice it can significantly improve the appearance of teeth. If teeth are misshapen or smaller than they should be, for instance gaps between teeth or teeth that still look like baby teeth, a veneer can also change the size of a tooth. With veneers a smile can be made more even and pleasing. Another benefit of veneers is for teeth that are crooked or uneven. Teeth like this can be improved using braces but this is often time consuming taking sometimes a year or two to be complete. Veneers on the other hand can be started and finished often in two appointments within a month of each other. Compared to other alternatives, veneers are often the beautiful and quickly accomplished alternative.
FURTHER INFORMATION ABOUT VENEERS
Porcelain veneers are very esthetic and long lasting. Their color will never change, looking very esthetic for years. Veneers often don’t require local anesthesia because they are so minimally invasive.
